IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL
“…And We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful torment.” 4: 37
“Verily, those who disbelieve, and die while they are disbelievers, it is they on whom is the Curse of Allah and of the angels and of mankind, combined. They will abide therein (under the curse in Hell), their punishment will neither be lightened, nor will they be reprieved.” 2: 161-162
And Musa (Moses) said: “If you disbelieve, you and all on earth together, then verily! Allah is Rich (Free of all wants), Owner of all Praise.” 14: 8
2. Arrogance
“Allah the Almighty states in the Holy Quran:
“‘…Surely, Allah loves not the proud and the boastful.’ (4: 36)
The first one who showed arrogance towards Allah and His creation was the accursed Iblees, when Allah commanded him to prostrate to Adam and he refused and was arrogant, and said, “I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay.”
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being); then We told the angels, ‘Prostrate yourselves to Adam’, and they prostrated themselves, except Iblees (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrated themselves.
(Allah) said: ‘What prevented you (O Iblees) that you did not prostrate yourself, when I commanded you?’ Iblees said: ‘I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay’”
[al-A’raaf 7:11-12]
Arrogance is one of the characteristics of Iblees, so whoever wants to be arrogant should realize that he is acquiring a characteristic of the devils, and that he is not acquiring a characteristic of the noble angels who obeyed their Lord and fell down prostrate.
Moreover, arrogance may be the cause of a person being deprived of Paradise and may mean that the Lord of Glory will not even look at him, as it says in the following ahaadeeth:
It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No one who has an atom’s-weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes his clothes and his shoes to look good?” He said, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”
Narrated by Muslim, 91.
Arrogance is of several types, including the following:
1 – When a person does not accept the truth and produces false arguments against it, as we have mentioned in the hadeeth of ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood, “Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”
2 – When a person admires himself for his beauty or handsomeness, or the fineness of his food or clothing, so he feels proud and arrogant and feels superior to people.
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said (or Abu’l-Qaasim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said): “Whilst a man was walking, dragging his garment with pride, with his hair nicely combed, Allah caused the earth to swallow him and he will go on sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3297; Muslim, 2088
2. Boastfulness
“And he had property (or fruit) and he said to his companion, in the course of mutual talk: ‘I am more than you in wealth and stronger in respect of men’”
[al-Kahf 18:34]
It may be that he was boasting about his tribe and linage.
“And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allah likes not any arrogant boaster.
And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking, and lower your voice. Verily, the harshest of all voices is the braying of the asses”
[Luqmaan 31:18-19]
Examples – Fir’aun,
“Boastful is the one who believes that he bears such virtues that others do not have and then taunts others berating them of their lack of the intrinsic worth he believes he possesses. “Boastfulness results in man rejecting and denying the favours that Allah has conferred upon him, as he claims that that his achievements are due to his own personal effort and merit. Whosoever actually believes this denies Allah’s Beauty and Allah the Almighty does not love such a person.” (Ibid., p. 176)
– No understanding of Tawheed!
3. Transgression
Allah the Almighty also does not like the one who has the habit of exceeding the limits in his acts. He states:
“‘Surely, Allah loves not the transgressors.’ (Surah al-Baqarah, Ch.2: V.191)
In war, Islam prohibits certain things such as killing women of children, stealing properties of enemy, destroying places of worship, etc. Those who do these are the transgressors.
4. Dishonesty
“The one who is perfidious, meaning that they have perfidiousness in their nature, cannot be loved by Allah the Almighty. He states:
“ …Verily, Allah does not like anyone who is a betrayer of his trust, and indulges in crime. ‘.’ (4: 107)
Mainly addressing the hypocrites who has an intention to destroy Islam.
6. Taking delight in temporary pleasures
“The one who exults, meaning that the one who feels complete delight in temporary pleasures also cannot be loved by Allah the Almighty. Allah states:
“‘Surely, Allah loves not those who exult.’ (Surah al-Qasas, Ch.28.76) – ungrateful to Allah’s Favours.
14: 34
Say “Alhamdulillah” at all times.#
The one who is most deserving of thanks and praise from people is Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, because of the great favours and blessings that He has bestowed upon His slaves in both spiritual and worldly terms. Allah has commanded us to give thanks to Him for those blessings, and not to deny them. He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me” [2:152]
Du’a before saying salam to end the prayer.
7. Spreading disorder
Allah the Almighty states:
“‘Verily Allah loves not those who make mischief.’ (28: 77)
What has happened to Ya’juj and Ma’juj, and now in Palestine.
8. Ungratefulness
“The one who is ungrateful cannot love Allah the Almighty, nor can Allah the Almighty love him, for beneficence is a means of love. If one is not grateful, it means that they are unable to see beneficence. One who is unable to see beneficence is unable to love Allah the Almighty because the foremost door to Allah’s love is His beneficence. He states:
[=Verily! Allah likes not any treacherous, deceitful ingrate to Allah [those who disobey Allah but obey Shaitan (Satan)]..’ (22: 38)]
“Perfidious has been mentioned above. Ungrateful is the one who witnesses Allah’s favour and still does not inculcate gratefulness within themselves, as if the recognition of beneficence does not exist within them. And what can one attain who does not behold Allah’s beneficence and states, ‘What have I received?’ Even if Allah the Almighty grants His love to him, this person will state, ‘I have not been given anything.’ In another place in the Holy Quran, Allah the Almighty states:
[And when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks, I will grant you increase; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is severe.” (14: 7)]
9. Exceeding your bounds
“Allah the Almighty declares:
“‘Surely, Allah loves not those who exceed the bounds.’ (Surah al-An‘am, Ch.6: V.142) (those who waste by extravagance),
“The one who exceeds the bounds prefers their own selves and the pleasures of his nafs above the troubles and comforts of others. Who would like the person who dislikes spending in the way of Allah’s servants and would rather spend uselessly on his own self?
10. Injustice
“Allah the Almighty declares:
‘And Allah loves not the unjust.’ (3:140)
Verily, Allah enjoins Al-Adl (i.e. justice and worshipping none but Allah Alone – Islamic Monotheism) and Al-Ihsan [i.e. to be patient in performing your duties to Allah, totally for Allah’s sake and in accordance with the Sunnah (legal ways) of the Prophet in a perfect manner], and giving (help) to kith and kin(i.e. all that Allah has ordered you to give them e.g., wealth, visiting, looking after them, or any other kind of help, etc.): and forbids Al-Fahsha’ (i.e all evil deeds, e.g. illegal sexual acts, disobedience of parents, polytheism, to tell lies, to give false witness, to kill a life without right, etc.), and Al-Munkar (i.e all that is prohibited by Islamic law: polytheism of every kind, disbelief and every kind of evil deeds, etc.), and Al-Baghy (i.e. all kinds of oppression), He admonishes you, that you may take heed. 16: 90
