IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFULPeople are used to saying “lucky” or “fortunately”, sometimes by accident or sometimes even thinking that things happened by coincidence. They believe that it is by chance that this happens, forgetting that it is Allah Who Made things happened. وَاللَّهُ غالِبٌ عَلىٰ أَمرِهِ وَلٰكِنَّ أَكثَرَ النّاسِ لا يَعلَمونَ“…And Allah has full power and control over His Affairs, but most of men know not.” 12: 21It is confirmed that the Prophet SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “O Allaah, none can prevent what You have willed to bestow and none can bestow what You have willed to prevent, and no wealth or majesty can benefit anyone, as from You is all wealth and majesty.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].وَما تَشاءونَ إِلّا أَن يَشاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ العالَمينَ“And you cannot will unless (it be) that Allah wills the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)” [At-Takwir 81:29]إِنّا كُلَّ شَيءٍ خَلَقناهُ بِقَدَرٍ “Verily, We have created all things with Qadar (Divine Preordainment of all things before their creation as written in the Book of Decrees Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz).” [Al-Qamar 54:49] وَكانَ أَمرُ اللَّهِ قَدَرًا مَقدورًا“…And the Command of Allah is a decree determined [qadran maqduran].” [Al-Ahzab 33:38] In terms of provisions, death, good and bad deeds as well as final destination Paradise or Hellfire has been Determined in the mother’s womb:Verily each one of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days in the form of a drop of fluid (nutfah), then it is a clinging object for a similar period. Thereafter, it is a lump looking like it has been chewed for a similar period. The angel is then sent to him and he breathes into him the spirit. He is also commanded to issue four decrees: to record his sustenance, his life span, his deeds, and whether he will be unhappy (by entering Hell) or happy (by entering Paradise).By Allah, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is but an arm’s length between him and paradise, and that which has been recorded overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arm’s length between him and Hellfire, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it. [Bukhari and Muslim]Belief in Qadr is one of the essential articles of faith which we must have. Everything was ordained and decreed 50,000 years before the creations of the heavens and earth:And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah wrote the decrees concerning all created beings fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2653) It is all preserved in the Preserved Tabletأَلَم تَعلَم أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعلَمُ ما فِي السَّماءِ وَالأَرضِ ۗ إِنَّ ذٰلِكَ في كِتابٍ ۚ إِنَّ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ يَسيرٌ“Know you not that Allah knows all that is in the heaven and on the earth? Verily, it is (all) in the Book (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz). Verily, that is easy for Allah” [Al-Hajj 22:70]That is why as Muslims we always say inshaAllah when we want to do something in the future, because only Allah will Allow it to happen:وَلَا تَقُولَنَّ لِشَيْءٍ إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ذَٰلِكَ غَدًاإِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ“And never say of anything, ‘I shall do such and such thing tomorrow.’ Except (with the saying), ‘If Allah wills!’” [Al-Kahf 18:23, 24]So, how can things happen by luck or coincidence?
Everything was Written by Allah
Everything was preserved in the Preserved Tablet
Allah Ordered us to say InshaAllah, meaning with Allah’s Will if we were to do something in the future.
In addition, ALL these come under the umbrella of Tawheed Ar Ruboobiyah:Allah is the One Who creates, maintains, sustains, protects, guides, etc. So, by saying: “out of all the 1,000 candidates for this job, I was lucky to be the one who got the job” clearly.Imagine the prophets and characters in the Qur’an using these words:
Prophet Nuh(AS) saying “We are so lucky to be in this arc”
People of the cave saying “We are so lucky we are in this cave and no one can find us”
Musa (AS)’s mother saying – “How lucky for my son to be saved from the Nile river and picked up by the pharaoh himself, and how lucky that he is reunited with me.”
Musa (AS), after he went to Madyan and met the 2 girls and theit father – if Musa (AS) were to say – “How lucky I was, that I come to Madyan with nothing and ended up marrying a girl, getting accommodation and safety.
If there was “luck” involved, then surely there was disbelief in Allah’s beautiful Names:
Rabb
Al Razzaq
Al Muhaymin meaning the One who ensures well being and protection over His creation. He is also the ever watchful.
Al Hadi – the One Who Guides
Therefore disbelief in the Names of Allah is a Shirk Al Sama wal SifatConclusionBe careful NOT to use the word Lucky or Good luck, etc because it may lead to shirk.
