IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL
حَسبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعمَ الوَكيلُ
“HasbunAllah wa ni’mal wakeel” – the phrase which we always use and we often hear people using it. It is a very powerful phrase of Tawheed that emphasise on our complete reliance on Allah. This phrase was used in 3 occasions:
- In Qur’an surah 3 verse 173
Messenger of Allah Muhammad (ﷺ) when he was told: “A great army of the pagans had gathered against him, so fear them”. But this (warning) only increased him and the Muslims in Faith and they said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)”. [Al-Bukhari].
- By Prophet Ibrahim (AS) before he was thrown in the fire by his people.
According to hadith in Sahih Bukhari it shows that this dua was sufficent for Prophet Ibrahim (may peace be upon him). It was narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas who said:
When (Prophet) Ibrahim (Abraham) was thrown into the fire, he said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and, He is the Best Disposer of affairs.”
- By prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) when after he told the sahabah where the trumpet that would be blown marking the beginning of the Day of Judgment.
Abu Sa’eed Al Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
‘How can I be comfortable when the one with the horn is holding it to his lip, his ears listening for when he will be ordered to blow, so he can blow.’ It was as if that was very hard upon the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), so he said to them:
‘Say: “Allah is sufficient for us and what a good protector He is, and upon Allah we rely.” [Tirmidhi]
You are simply declaring and putting full trust in Allah and leaving matters to him.
Sufficient is Allah, whatever he decrees we should be happy. Understand sometimes Allah may have better different plans for us, one that may be completely different from what we conjured up in our heads.
Submitting to the will of Allah and leaving your affairs to Him is like lifting a heavy load off your shoulders. It is a spiritual healing touch in one’s life.
After the Battle of Uhud when the believers were defeated due to their disobedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him), Abu Sufyan who was leading the troops against the Prophet (peace be upon him) said on his way back to Makkah that next year they would come and defeat them again. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) what they should reply and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said he should tell Abu Sufyan that they would return there the next year. When the appointment came, Abu Sufyan was hesitant and afraid to fight the Prophet (peace be upon him) and so he told Nu’aym ibn Masood that he should spread the report that they had gathered a massive troops and were coming to crush them. Nu’aym asked what he would get in return for doing this and Abu Sufyan offered him ten strong she camels. He went to Madinah and started spreading the rumours.
The ayahs describes the situation, the purpose of Nu’aym’s spreading fake news was to instill fear among the believers – to terrify them so they would be paralysed, unable to fight back. To make them not fight because the other side was bound to win and they would be lambs to the slaughter.
Today we see the same tactic of spreading fear. Yet the ayah tells us how to deal with such a situation – instead of saying submit and surrender and give up in the face of adversity, it says increase your imaan – your faith in God.
Allah Reminded us:
“…And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things. (, 65:3)
