THE DAY OF JUDGMENT

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST GRACIOUS THE MOST MERCIFUL

Allah’s explanation on the Day of Judgment has been covered extensively in the Qur’an. In fact, we understand about one third of the Qur’an describes the Day of Judgment. The events occurring during This Day has not been covered in any other holy books today. Allah is so Merciful that He explains to us the events in order for us to prepare ourselves in this short period of time of our lives in this world. There will be distractions that prevent us from preparing for this Great Day and we must recognise these distractions and prevent them from affecting our preparation. Some of these distractions include:

  1. The dunya
  2. Shaytan
  3. Our companions
  4. Culture

Let’s now begin our journey to see what we will face in the Day of Judgment:

  1. BRIEF INTRODUCTION
  2. WHAT DID ALLAH SAY ABOUT THE DAY OF JUDGMENT IN THE QUR’AN?
  3. FIRST BLOW OF TRUMPET
  4. SECOND BLOW OF TRUMPET
  5. AFTER RESURRECTION
  6. ON THE PLANE OF JUDGMENT
  7. ARRIVAL OF ALLAH SWT AND BEGINNING OF JUDGMENT
  8. AN NAJWA
  9. PRESENTATION OF THE RECORD OF DEEDS
  10. INTERCESSION OF THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH (SAW)
  11. POND OF AL KAUTHAR
  12. THE SCALES
  13. THE SIRAT (BRIDGE)
  14. AFTER THE SIRAT
  15. THE VERY LAST STAGE
  1. INTRODUCTION

Allah Reminded us:

“O you who believe! Fear Allah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.”  (Surah al Hashr 59: 18)

Therefore Allah is addressing us, if we called ourselves as “those who have believed” to prepare for the Day of Judgment NOW! Not when we get old or not when we become sick, but when we are given the capacity and good health. It is simply because when death comes, then it’s GAME OVER – our time for preparation would be OVER!

In the very last verse which was revealed in the Qur’an, Allah Warned us:

“And be afraid of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allah. Then every person shall be paid what he earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly.” (Surah al Baqarah 2: 281)

Why are many people not prepared for Day of Judgment?

  1. No knowledge what is to come in the Hereafter
  2. Simply has deficiency in belief in the 6 Articles of faith (Rukn Iman)
  3. Attractions of the Dunya
  4. Shaytan
  5. Receive no Guidance from Allah
  6. Lack of efforts- lazy – Nafs
  7. Does not understand purpose of life
  8. Poor companionship
  9. Thinks that death is not impending
  10. Poor planning

Let us go now on a journey to see what exactly will happen in the Day of Judgment, and hopefully by the end of this talk, everyone will be more afraid of the Day of Judgment and therefore will be smarter – in the sense that preparation and investment for the Day of Judgment must come now as a matter of urgency.

  • WHAT DID ALLAH SAY ABOUT THE DAY OF JUDGMENT IN THE QUR’AN

At least one third of the Qur’an is about the Day of Judgment. Everything that we need to know is found in the Qur’an and supplemented by authentic hadiths. So, there is no excuse for us not to be unaware of the events happening in the Day of Judgment.

Allah, there is no god but He– He will most certainly gather you together on the resurrection day, there is no doubt in it; and who is more true in word than Allah?                    (Surah an Nisa 4:87)

“O man! Verily you are returning to your Lord with your deeds and actions (good or bad), a sure returning, and you will meet (the results of your deeds which you did)            (Surah al Inshiqaq 84: 6)

Therefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event)                                                                                   The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for                                                 (Surah an Nazi’at 79: 34-35)

What! did you then think that We had created you in vain and that you shall not be returned to Us? So exalted be Allah, the True King; no god is there but He, the Lord of the honorable dominion.                                                  (Surah al Mu’minoon 23: 115-116)

  • THE FIRST BLOW OF TRUMPET

The angel Israfil will be ordered to blow the trumpet, and the following will occur:

يَوْمَ تُبَدَّلُ الْأَرْضُ غَيْرَ الْأَرْضِ وَالسَّمَاوَاتُ ۖ وَبَرَزُوا لِلَّهِ الْوَاحِدِ الْقَهَّارِ

On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth, and the heavens (as well), and they shall come forth before Allah, the One, the Supreme.                        (Surah Ibrahim 14: 48)

  1. The Ocean

And when the seas are set on fire. (Surah at Takwir 81:6)

  1. The Sky

When the heaven is split asunder             (Surah al Inshiqaq 84: 1)

What you are promised will certainly happen. When the stars are extinguished, when Heaven is split open.                                                 (Surat al-Mursalat, 7-9)

  1. The Mountain

They will ask about the mountains, say: My Lord will break them into scattered dust and Then leave it a plain, smooth level so you see neither curve nor ruggedness.                                     (Surah Taha 20: 105-107)

And the mountains will be like wool    (Surah al Ma’arij 70: 9)

And when the trumpet is blown with a single blast, And the earth is moved, and its mountains, and they are crushed to powder at one stroke.                                                   (Surah al Haaqqa 69: 13-14)

  1. The Last Day will occur on a Friday

“The Final Day will only fall on al -Jumuah.” (Muslim)

  • Allah SWT will take the earth and the heaven in His Hand

Abdullah b. ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saying: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would fold the Heavens on the Day of Judgment and then He would place them on His tight hand and say: I am the Lord; where are the haughty and where are the proud (today)? He would fold the’ earth (placing it) on the lef t hand and say: I am the Lord; where are the haughty and where are the proud (today)?                           (Muslim)

And they have not honored Allah with the honor that is due to Him; and the whole earth shall be in His grip on the day of resurrection and the heavens rolled up in His right hand; glory be to Him, and may He be exalted above what they associate (with Him (Surah az Zumar 39:67)

  • THE SECOND BLOW OF TRUMPET

Allah ordered the angel Israfil to blow the trumpet for the second time.

  1. The rain will fall and souls will be resurrected.

“Allah will send down rain from the sky and people will grow like vegetation.”                                                         (al Bukhari and Muslim)

  1. Resurrection

“And the Trumpet will be blown (i.e.  the second blowing) and behold!  From the graves they will come out quickly to their Lord.” (Quran 36:51)

  1. Everyone will be resurrected naked:

People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefoot, naked and uncircumcised. It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“You will be gathered barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.” Then he recited, “As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it. (It is) a promise binding upon Us. Truly, We shall do it” [al-Anbiya’ 21:104 – interpretation of the meaning]. Then he said: “The first one to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Ibraaheem. Some people from among my followers will be taken away towards the left and I will say, ‘My followers, my followers!’ He will say, ‘They kept turning back on their heels after you left them.’ And I will say what the righteous slave said:

‘And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them; and You are a Witness to all things. (This is a great admonition and warning to the Christians of the whole world).

If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily, You, only You, are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise’

[al-Maa’idah 5:117].”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3349)

Aishah, the Mother of the Believers, exclaimed: “Men and women both!  Won’t they all look at each other?”  The Prophet, SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam , said:

“The situation they are in is so grim that they would have no time for this!” (Saheeh Muslim)

  1. Animals

Also included in this gathering are the animals. Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) said:

“As for the animals, they will all be gathered by Allaah, as is indicated by the Qur’aan and Sunnah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘There is not a moving (living) creature on earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book, then unto their Lord they (all) shall be gathered’                       [al-An’aam 6:38]

‘And when the wild beasts are gathered together’            [al-Takweer 81:5]

On the Day of Resurrection Allaah will gather the animals, and the scores among them will be settled. Then it will be said to them, “Be dust!” and they will become dust. At that point the kaafir will say, “Would that I were dust!” (al-Naba’ 72:40 – interpretation of the meaning). Whoever says that they will not be brought back to life is making a serious mistake, indeed he is misguided or is a kaafir. And Allaah knows best.                   Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 4/248

Ahmad (20534) narrated from Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was sitting, and two sheep locked horns, and one of them butted the other and defeated it. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) smiled, and it was said to him, “Why are you smiling, O Messenger of Allaah?” He said, “Because of the sheep. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it will settle its score with the other on the Day of Resurrection.”

Muslim (2582) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “All rights will be restored on the Day of Resurrection, until even the hornless sheep will settle its score with the one that has horns.”

  • AFTER RESURRECTION
  • The plane of Resurrection

Earth bows to Allah’s will, for:

When Earth is flattened out and disgorges what is inside it and empties out, hearkening to its Lord, as it is bound to do! (Surat al-Inshiqaq, 3-5)

The people will be gathered on that Day on another earth, one that is different from this earth, with specific features that are explained in the Sunnah. It was narrated that Sahl ibn Sa’d said: “I heard the Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, ‘The people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection on reddish white land like a pure loaf of bread (made from pure fine flour).” Sahl or someone else said, “It will have no landmarks for anyone (to make use of).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6521)

‘Afra’ (translated here as reddish) means white that has a hint of redness; or it was said that it is intensely white; or it was said that it means pure white.  A pure loaf of bread means a loaf that is made from pure flour that is unadulterated.

  1. The Sun brought close

As humankind awaits the decree of Almighty God, they would be standing under the sun, which would be brought close to them.

Al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad, one of the Companions, said: ‘I heard the Messenger of God (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saying:

“The sun will be a distance of a mile from the creation on the Day of Resurrection.  People will sink in their perspiration according to their deeds.  Some would sink in their perspiration till their ankles, while others would sink in it to their thighs and waists; yet others, would sink in it till their mouths!”‘ (Saheeh Muslim)

  1. The length of time

If anyone of us, today, was to sweat on a sunny day, they wouldn’t be able to wait to hit the showers… the Day of Resurrection will be 50 000 years long.  The Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“That day will be 50 000 years long, after which a person will be admitted into Paradise or cast into Hell.” (Abu Dawood)

  1. Clothing on Day of Judgmnt

We will be clothed according to our level of Iman. The angels will bring clothing of prophets, martyrs, the righteous.

  • We will be resurrected with the group we used to follow in this world
  • Some will be resurrected blind

“But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narrowed down, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment. He will say: “O my Lord! why hast Thou raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)?” ((Allah)) will say: “Thus didst Thou, when Our Signs came unto thee, disregard them: so wilt thou, this day, be disregarded.”   (surah Taha 20:124-126)

  • Some people will have dark evil man on the shoulder (sins of the people)
  • Some people will have good looking man on the shoulder (good deeds – confirming glad tidings)
  1. Each soul will have 2 angels

And there will come forth every soul: with each will be an (angel) to drive, and an (angel) to bear witness.                (Surah Qaf 50:21)

  • Everyone will be in great horror

Everyone including the prophets will say “Ya nafsi, ya nafsi”, except our prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) who will say “Ya Ummati, Ya Ummati!”

Peoples’ hearts will be pounding, not knowing what would become of them.  Allah describes to us the horrors of that day.  He says:

“On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.” (Quran Surah al Hajj 22:2)

Even the believers who believed in truth will be severely worried.  Allah says:

“And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord.” (Surah al Mu’minoon 23:60)

Aishah, may God be pleased with her, said: “Are they those who drink liquor, and steal?”  The Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) answered:

“No, Aishah, they are the ones who fast, pray and give out in charity, but are fearful that their deeds would not be accepted from them.” (Saheeh Muslim)

Surah Abasa 80:33-37 –

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother,

And from his mother and his father,

And from his wife and his children.

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.

  • ON THE PLANE OF JUDGMENT (Field of mahsyar)
  • 7 people were shaded by the throne of Allah

The Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade:

– a just ruler;

– a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic;

– a man whose heart is attached to the mosques;

– two men who love each other for Allah’s sake, meeting for that and parting upon that;

– a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but be says: ‘I fear Allah’,

– a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and

– a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.”

(Bukhari & Muslim)

  1. Those who recite Al Baqarah and Al Imran

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Umamah Al-Bahili said that he heard the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam say,

“Read the two lights, Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran, because they will come in the shape of two clouds, two shades or two lines of birds on the Day of Resurrection and will argue on behalf of their people on that Day.”

It was also recorded in Sahih Muslim and At-Tirmidhi narrated this Hadith, which he rendered Hasan Gharib.

  • ARRIVAL OF ALLAH SWT AND BEGINNING OF JUDGMENT
  • During all the chaos and commotion, suddenly a sound is heard and angels are seen coming in ranks and rows – ALLAH’S ARRIVAL:

وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks (Surah al Fajr 89:22)

Allah SWT has arrived and the Judgment will begin. The promised Day had arrived and judgement will proceed.

  1. The order of Judgment will be as follows:
  2. The ulama’ (scholars and people of knowledge)
  3. People with money
  4. The reciters of the Quran (the Qura’)
  5. The angel will call: “Where is Fulan bin Fulan bin Fulan?”The persona called will be terrified and will have to appear before Allah SWT to be Judged.
  1. Prayer will be the first thing a person will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment. Prayer is a right of Allah (S.W.T), and people will be questioned about it. They will be asked if their prayers were done completely and with good quality. If a person performs prayers with the utmost of quality, then the person will be saved. If the prayers were done incompletely or half-heartedly, then his voluntary prayers will suffice for the shortcomings.

The Messenger (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) told us in an authentic hadith , “The first thing the people will be accountable for on the Day of Judgment is prayer, Allah will say to His angels (even though he already knows) : “Look at my servants prayers. Were they complete or not?” If they were complete It will be written as complete. If they were not fully complete Allah will say: “See if my servant has voluntary prayers, If he has them Allah will say: Complete his obligatory prayers shortage with his voluntary prayers.” Then the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in the same manner.” {Reported by Imams Ahmad, Abu Dawood, An-Nisa’i, and Al-Hakim}

  • We will be asked in the Day of Judgment about five things.

The prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The son of Adam will not pass away from Allah until he is asked about five things: how he lived his life, and how he utilized his youth, with what means did he earn his wealth, how did he spend his wealth, and what did he do with his knowledge.” {Good hadith reported by Imam At-Tirmithi}

”The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he has been questioned about (four things: ) his life – how he spent it; his knowledge – how he acted upon it; his wealth – where he earned it and how he spent it; and his body – how he used it.”            (Narrated by Tirmidhi)

“Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (You indulged in, in this world).         (Surah At-Takathur 102: 8)

  • Body parts will talk

”Do not follow that which you have no knowledge of; (your) hearing, sight and hear – you will be questioned about all of them.” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:36)

“On the day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will bear witness against them as to their actions”. (Surah An-Nur 24:24).

“And they will say to their skin:” Why did you bear witness against us? “They will say “Allah has caused us to speak, as He cause all things to speak.” ( Surah Al-Fussillat 41: 21)

The Messenger SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam described the questioning in a speech reported by Imam Muslim, that the prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Allah (S.W.T.) will meet a person and ask him: “O person, Wasn’t I generous with you, and made you with a spouse, and made the horses and camels at your disposal? The servant will reply “yes”! Allah (S.W.T.) will then ask “Did you think that you will meet me?” He will reply: “No!” Allah (S.W.T.) will say: “I will forget you like you forgot me”! Then Allah (S.W.T.) will meet another person and his reply will be the same as the first person. Then Allah (S.W.T.) will meet a third person and will ask similar questions, and the person’s reply will be: “O Lord I believed in you, in your books, and in your messengers. I prayed, I fasted, and I gave charity. And he will praise Allah as much as he can. Allah (S.W.T.) will say: “Hold on to your words, Now we will bring the witnesses. The person will ask himself “Who will testify against me?” Then that persons mouth will be sealed, and his thighs, flesh and bones will be asked to speak. They will speak about his bad deeds. He will know that he has no excuse. That is the hypocrite Allah (S.W.T.) will be furious with!”

  • About those under their care

”O you believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a fire whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels strong, severe, who resist not God in which He commands them, but do that which they are commanded.” (Surah At-Tahrim, 66:6)

”Every one of you is a guardian, and every one of you will be asked about those in his care.  The man is a guardian over his family, and will be questioned about those in his care.  The women is a guardian over her husband’s house, and will be questioned about that in her care.  The servant is a guardian over his master’s property, and will be questioned for that in his care.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

  • About the covenants

Also Allah (S.W.T.) will ask us in the Day of Judgment about all of our convenants and promises that have made in our lives. Those promises may be made to Allah (S.W.T.) or made to people.

“And fulfil (every) covenant. Verily! The covenant, will be questioned about. ”                                                      ( Surat Al-Israa 17: 34)

  • AN NAJWA
  1. The private talk between Allah and each of His slaves on the Day of Resurrection.

Al Bukhari and Muslim:

Narrated Safwan bin Muhriz Almazini:

While I was walking with Ibn ‘Umar holding his hand, a man came in front of us and asked, “What have you heard from Allah’s Apostle about An-Najwa?” Ibn ‘Umar said, “I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘Allah will bring a believer near Him and shelter him with His Screen and ask him: Did you commit such-and-such sins? He will say: Yes, my Lord. Allah will keep on asking him till he will confess all his sins and will think that he is ruined. Allah will say: ‘I did screen your sins in the world and I forgive them for you today’, and then he will be given the book of his good deeds. Regarding infidels and hypocrites (their evil acts will be exposed publicly) and the witnesses will say: These are the people who lied against their Lord. Behold! The Curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.” (surah Hud 11.18)

The good believer will have an easy reckoning and Allah (S.W.T.) will cover up his sins after He reminds him about them. Then he will forgive him from his sins, and allow him to enter paradise.

  1. Allah will confront His servant directly, without a mediator.

The Messenger (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “ Allah will talk to everyone directly, without a translator. The person will look to his right, and will not see anything but his deeds. Then the person, will look in front of himself and will see nothing but the hellfire facing him. So protect yourself from Hellfire even by giving a charity of half a date.”                                                {Reported by Imam Bukhari}

  • PRESENTATION OF THE RECORD OF DEEDS

So. he who has done an atom’s weight of good shall see it; And he who has done an atom’s weight of evil shall see it.   (Surah al Zalzalah 99: 7-8)

And the Book shall be placed, then you will see the guilty fearing from what is in it, and they will say: Ah! woe to us! what a book is this! it does not omit a small one nor a great one, but numbers them (all); and what they had done they shall find present (there); and your Lord does not deal unjustly with anyone.                                                 (Surah al Kahf 18: 49)

The Record will be presented in a person’s:

  1. Right Hand (Surah al Haqqah 69: 19-24)
    1. Left Hand (Surah al Haqqah 69: 25-36)
    1. Back side (Surah al Inshiqaq 84: 10-14)

Then as for him who will be given his Record in his right hand will say: “Take, read my Record! Surely, I did believe that I shall meet my Account! So he shall be in a life, well-pleasing. In a lofty Paradise; The fruits in bunches whereof will be low and near at hand. Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent on before you in days past! “  (Surah al Haqqah 69: 19-24)

But as for him who will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: “I wish that I had not been given my Record! And that I had never known, how my Account is? I wish, would that it had been my end (death)! My wealth has not availed me, My power and arguments (to defend myself) have gone from me!” (It will be said): ‘Seize him and fetter him, Then throw him in the blazing Fire. Then fasten him with a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits! Verily, He used not to believe in Allah, the Most Great, And urged not on the feeding of Al-Miskin (the poor), So no friend has he here this Day, Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds.’  (Surah al Haqqah 69: 25-36)

And as to him who is given his record behind his back. He will soon call for death. And he shall enter the blazing fire. Undoubtedly, he was happy in his household. He imagined that he is not to return.                        (Surah al Inshiqaq 84: 10-14)

  1. INTERCESSION

As humankind waits, some would exclaim, ‘Let us ask somebody to intercede for us with our Lord!’  The people would then go to Adam and say:

‘You are the father of all the people, and Allah created you with His Own Hands, and ordered the Angels to prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with your Lord, so that He may relieve us from this place of ours.’

He would say: ‘I am not fit for this (i.e. intercession for you).’

Adam would remember his sin and feel ashamed thereof.  He would then say, ‘Go to Noah, for he was the first Messenger, God sent to the inhabitants of the Earth.’

He would say: ‘I am not fit for this undertaking!’

He will remember his appeal to his Lord to do what he had no knowledge of, then he will feel ashamed thereof and would say,

‘Go to the Khalil ur-Rahman (i.e. Abraham, the One whom God chose for His love).’

They will go to him and he will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.  Go to Moses, the slave to whom God spoke (directly) and gave him the Torah.’

So they will go to him and he will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking,’ and he will mention (his) killing a person who was not a killer, and so he will feel ashamed thereof before his Lord, and he will say, ‘Go to Jesus, God’s Slave, His Messenger and God’s Word and a Spirit coming from Him.’

Jesus will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking, go to Muhammad the Slave of God whose past and future sins were forgiven by God.’

Prophet Muhammad then said: ‘They will come to me and I will proceed till I will ask my Lord’s Permission and I will be given permission.  When I see my Lord, I will fall down in Prostration and He will let me remain in that state as long as He wishes and then I will be addressed.’ [Muhammad!] Raise your head.  Ask, and your request will be granted; say, and your saying will be listened to; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.’

I will raise my head and praise God with a saying (i.e. invocation) He will teach me, and then I will intercede.  He will fix a limit for me [to intercede for] whom I will admit into the Paradise.  Then I will come back again to God, and when I see my Lord, the same thing will happen to me.  And then I will intercede and God will fix a limit for me to intercede whom I will let into the Heavenly Abode, then I will come back for the third time; and then I will come back for the fourth time, and will say, ‘None remains in Hell but those whom the Quran has imprisoned [in Hell] and who have been destined to an eternal stay in Hell.’”

 (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

10.    POND OF AL KAUTHAR

Muslim, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i, all recorded from Anas that he said, "While we were with the Messenger of Allah in the Masjid, he dozed off into a slumber. Then he lifted his head smiling. We said, `O Messenger of Allah! What has caused you to laugh' He said, “(Verily, a Surah was just revealed to me.)” Then he recited,

Verily, We have granted you Al-Kawthar.
Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice.
For he who hates you, he will be cut off.
 (Surah al Kawthar 108: 1-3)

Then he (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,

The meaning of Al-Kawthar
“(Do you all know what is Al-Kawthar)” We said, `Allah and His Messenger know best.' He (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,

“Verily, it is a river that my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, has promised me and it has abundant goodness. It is a pond where my Ummah will be brought to on the Day of Judgement. Its containers are as numerous as the stars in the sky. Then a servant of Allah from among them will be (prevented from it) and I will say: "O Lord! Verily, he is from my Ummah (followers).'' Then He (Allah) will say: "Verily, you do not know what he introduced (or innovated) after you.)''

This is the wording of Muslim. Ahmad recorded this Hadith from Muhammad bin
Fudayl, who reported from Al-Mukhtar bin Fulful, who reported it from Anas bin Malik.

– Location: Plane of Resurrection.

-. Shape: Square

– Length: Distance between Damascus and Sana’a (Capital of Yemen)

– Special features:

1. Water cooler than ice

2. Taste sweeter than honey

3.  Smell more beautiful than musk

4. Pond has 2 tunnels from river of jannah

5. Number of cups: like the number of stars

6. Function of pond: noone will be thirsty after drinking from the pond (Bukhari and Muslim)

       11. THE SCALES

After drinking from the pond, the deeds will be weighed. Each side of the scale is like the size of the heaven and earth. (Narrated by al Hakim – verified authentic by al Bani)

Everyone’s deeds will be weighed in actual scale and if the good outweighs the evil, they will be successful but if the opposite happens they will be among the losers.

Then as for him whose measure of good deeds is heavy,
He shall live a pleasant life.
And as for him whose measure of good deeds is light,
His abode shall be the abyss.
And what will make you know what it is? A burning fire.

(Surah al Qariah 101: 6-11)

And We will set up a just balance on the day of resurrection, so no soul shall be dealt with unjustly in the least; and though there be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, (yet) will We bring it, and sufficient are We to take account.  (Surah al Anbiya’ 21: 47)

On that day, the truth only will have weight. So, those whose scales are heavy shall attain salvation, and those whose scales are light shall be the ones who have incurred a loss because they wronged their souls by denying Our revelations. (Surah al A’raf 7:8-9)

Ibn Abbas said: good and bad deeds will be weighed in the Scale that has a tongue and two pans. A believer will be brought forward in a good state with his deeds, and when his deeds are put in one of the pans, it becomes heavier than the other. This is mentioned in the verse: {…So as for those whose scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).}[7:8]. The deeds of an unbeliever will be brought in a bad repulsive state, and when they will be put in the pan of the scale; they will have no weight, and ultimately he will be thrown in the Fire (Hell). [ al-Qurtubi ]

al-Tabri reported from Ibn Masoud that he said: all people will be called to their account on the Day of Judgment. Even if the good deeds of the person surpass his bad deeds by only one good deed, he will enter Paradise. Likewise only one bad deed more, entitles the person to enter the Fire (Hell). And the one whose good and bad deeds are equal will be among the people of A’araf .

  1. First, those who will enter the Paradise without reckoning, deeds of such category will not be weighed at all (Sahihain).
  2.  Second, Kuffars (disbelievers), their deeds will have no weight in the scale. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning):

{And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust. }[Al Furqan 25:23].
{…So their works are in vain, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall not give them any weight. }  [Al Kafh 18:105].

  1. Third, those people whose good deeds will surpass the bad deeds thus they will enter the Paradise.
  2. Fourth, those people whose bad deeds will have more weight than the good ones; they will enter the Fire (Hell) and stay there to the extent of their bad deeds. Finally they will go to the Paradise.
  3. Fifth, those people whose deeds will be weighed, and their good deeds will be equal to their bad ones; their destination will be al-A’araf.

Heaviest deeds:

  1. “Laila ha illallah” – Some will have no good deeds but scrolls and scrolls of bad deeds, but argued with Allah that they have held on to the saying “There is No God but Allah – La ilaha illallah”, and Allah said they will not be wrongs and will be asked to proceed ( Tarmidhi, ibn Majah – verified authentic by albani)
  2. Next heavy weight on the scales : Good manners

Abu Darda reported the Prophet of Allah [SAW] said:“Nothing is weightier on the Scale of Deeds than one’s good manners.”[Bukharee]

  • SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi, Subhan-Allahi ‘l-`adheem (Glory be to Allah, and Praise, Glory be to Allah, the Supreme)

Prophet Muhammad said: “Two words are light on the tongue, weigh heavily in the balance, they are loved by the Most Merciful One.”(al Bukhari and Muslim)

12. THE SIRAT (SLIPPERY BRIDGE)

And there is not one of you but shall come to it; this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord. (Surah Maryam 19:71)

The al-sirat is a long and narrow bridge that everyone will have to pass through before entering Heaven. It is believed to be a “bridge over Hell”. The Quran does not say anything about this bridge, except in Surah 19 Verse 71.

  1.                   Sahih Bukhari-Volume 8, Book 76, Number 577:

    Narrated Abu Huraira:

….Then a bridge will be laid over the (Hell) Fire.” Allah’s Apostle added, “I will be the first to cross it. And the invocation of the Apostles on that Day, will be ‘Allahumma Sallim, Sallim (O Allah, save us, save us!),’ and over that bridge there will be hooks similar to the thorns of As Sa’dan (a thorny tree). Didn’t you see the thorns of As-Sa’dan?” The companions said, “Yes, O Allah’s Apostle.” He added, “So the hooks over that bridge will be like the thorns of As-Sadan except that their greatness in size is only known to Allah. These hooks will snatch the people according to their deeds. Some people will be ruined because of their evil deeds, and some will be cut into pieces and fall down in Hell, but will be saved afterwards, when Allah has finished the judgments among His slaves, and intends to take out of the Fire whoever He wishes ….
    1.                    Sahih Bukhari-Volume 9, Book 93, Number 532B:

      Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri:

….. Then the bridge will be laid across Hell.” We, the companions of the Prophet said, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is the bridge?’

He said, “It is a slippery (bridge) on which there are clamps and (Hooks like) a thorny seed that is wide at one side and narrow at the other and has thorns with bent ends. Such a thorny seed is found in Najd and is called As-Sa’dan. Some of the believers will cross the bridge as quickly as the wink of an eye, some others as quick as lightning, a strong wind, fast horses or she-camels. So some will be safe without any harm; some will be safe after receiving some scratches, and some will fall down into Hell (Fire). The last person will cross by being dragged (over the bridge).” ..
    1.                   Sahih Muslim-Book 001, Number 0353:

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri: ……Abu Sa’id said: I have come to know that the bridge would be thinner even than the hair and sharper than the sword; ……
    1.                      Sahih Muslim – Book 031, Number 6090:

Umm Mubashshir reported that she heard Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying in presence of Hafsa: God willing, the people of the Tree would never enter the fire of Hell one amongst those who owed allegiance under that. She said: Allah’s Messenger, why not? He scolded her. Hafsa said: And there is none amongst you but shall have to pass over that (narrow Bridge). Thereupon Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, has said: “But We shall save those who guarded against evil, and We shall leave the wrong-doers therein, (humbled) to their knees.”(19:72)

How to save oneself? LIGHT

Al- Bayhaqi narrated that Abdullah said:

“God Almighty gathers the people on the Day of Judgment…. Some of them are given their light that by it, they may find their way over the bridge and into paradise. This light for some is like a mountain emanating from between their hands. Some of them will have light that exceeds that. Some will be given their light which seems like a palm tree in their right hand. Some are given more light than that until the last person is given his light the size of his big toe (it lights a little bit then goes off another). When it lights, he advances and when it turns off he stops…..They will cross the bridge which is sharper than a sword and very slippery. Then it is said to them: Proceed equal to your light some of them will pass it like the swooping down of a star. Others will pass on it like the wind, some will pass so fast it seems like a blink of an eye and others will be dragging themselves. The way each person will pass over the bridge depends on his or her good deeds (their light). The more good deeds, the faster and easier journey you will have. The person whose light doesn’t exceed his big toe will pass over the bridge with one hand clinging and the other hand slipping; with one leg slipping and the other one hanging on. The fire will burn his sides. After they pass over the bridge that goes over the Hell fire, they will say: All praise to God who saved us from you (the fire), after we saw you and He gave us what He didn’t give anyone else(Bukhari)

God Almighty told us about this event, when the believers pass over the bridge. He said:

“On the Day you shall see the believing men and the believing women: their light running forward before them and by their right hands. Glad tidings to you on this Day! Gardens under which rivers flow (paradise) to dwell therein forever! Truly this is the great success. On the Day when the hypocrites-men and women- will say to the believers: ‘Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!’ So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy and outside it will be torment. The hypocrites will call the believers: ‘Were we not with you?’ the believers will reply: ‘Yes, but you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted (in faith) and you were deceived by false desires, till the command of God came to pass. And the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect to God. So this Day no ransom shall be taken from you (hypocrites), nor the ones who disbelieved (in the Oneness of God) your abode is the fire, and that is your proper place. And worst indeed is that destination” (Qur’an 57: 12-15)

STEPS TO TAKE TO GET THIS LIGHT

  1. DUA

Rabbana atmeem lana noorana waghfirlana

Innaka ‘ala kulli shay-in qadeer

“Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us [and do not put it off till we cross over the Sirât (a slippery bridge over the Hell) safely] and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things.” (Surah 66:8)

  • WALKING TO THE MOSQUE FOR FAJR AND ISHA PRAYERS

Buraidah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (SallAllahu ‘alagyhi wa sallam) said, “Convey glad tidings to those who walk to the mosque in the darkness. For they will be given full light on the Day of Resurrection.”                 [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].

Commentary: “In the darkness” here indicates the Fajr and `Isha’ prayers which are performed when it is dark. Because of the street lighting nowadays we do not feel darkness in these hours in towns and cities but even then these lights do not overcome the darkness completely. Thus in spite of the lights, Fajr and `Isha’ prayers are the prayers of the dark. Their merit mentioned in this Hadith is that those Muslims who go to the mosque for these prayers will be endowed with perfect light on the Day of Requital by means of which they will easily cross As-Sirat, while those who will be deprived of this light will be facing great trouble in crossing it.

  • RECITE AL KALF ON FRIDAYS

Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Bayhaqi also recorded it in his Sunan from Al-Hakim, then he narrated with his own chain that the Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whoever recites Surat Al-Kahf as it was revealed, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.”

  • DUA BEFORE GOING TO MOSQUE

O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light.1 [O Allah, make for me a light in my grave… and a light in my bones.](At-Tirmithi 5/483 (Hadith no. 3419).) [Increase me in light, increase me in light, increase me in light .](Al-Bukhari in Al-‘Adab Al-Mufrad (Hadith no. 695), p. 258. See also Al-Albani, Sahih Al-‘Adab Al-Mufrad(no. 536).) [Grant me light upon light.] (Al-Bukhari, cf. Al-Asqalani, Fathul-Bari 11/118.)

Reference: 1 Up to this point was reported by Al-Bukhari 11 / 116 (Hadith no. 6316) and by Muslim 1/526, 529-530 (Hadithno. 763).

13. AFTER THE SIRAT

Abu Sa’id al Khudri reported Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as saying: “When the believers pass safely over (the bridge across) Hell, they will be stopped at a bridge between Hell and Paradise where they will retaliate against one another for the injustices done among them in the world, and when they are purified of all their sins, they will be admitted to Paradise. By Him in Whose hands the life of Muhammad is, everybody will recognize his dwelling in Paradise better than he recognizes his dwelling in this world.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Fath Al-Bari)

And the hadith of the prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) continued when he said: “Then the bridge will be laid across Hell, and the companions of the prophets asked: “What is the bridge, O, Messenger of Allah?” He said: ” It is a slippery bridge on which there are clamps and hooks like a thorny seed that is wide at one side and narrow at the other and thorns with bent ends. Such a thorny seed is found in Najd and is called As-Sa’dan. Some of the believers will cross the bridge as quickly as the wink of an eye, some others as quick as lightning, as a strong wind, and as fast horses, so some will be safe without any harm; some will be safe after receiving some scratches, and some will fall down into the Hell Fire. The last person will cross by being dragged over the bridge. Some believers will say after they have crossed the bridge safely: O Allah! Save our Muslim brothers for they used to pray with us, fast with us, and also do good deeds with us, Allah will say: “Go and take out (of Hell) any one in whose heart you find faith equal to the weight of one (Dinar); Allah will forbid the Fire to burn there faces in of those sinners. They will go to them and find some of them in Hell Fire up to their feet, and some up to the middle of their legs, so they will take out those whom they will recognize and then they will return, and Allah will say to them: “Go and take out of Hell anyone in whose heart you find faith equal to the weight of one half Dinar.” They will take out whomever they will recognize and return. And then Allah will say: “Go and take out (of Hell anyone in whose heart you find faith equal to the weight of an atom (or smallest ant).” And so they will take out all those whom they will recognize.

The prophet (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.) then continued saying: “Then the prophets and angels and the believers will intercede, and (last of all) the Almighty Allah will say: “Now remains my intercession.” He will then hold a handful of the Fire from which He will take out some people whose bodies have been burned, and they will be thrown into a river at the sides of paradise, called the water of the life. They will grow on its banks, as a seed carried by the water stream. They then will come out of the river like pearls, and they will have necklace, and they will enter Paradise where upon the people of Paradise will say: “These are the people who were let free by the beneficent. He has admitted them into Paradise without them having them have done any good deeds and without sending forth any good (for themselves). Then it will be said to them: ” For you is what you have seen and its equivalent as well.”

(Al Bukhari narrated by al Khudri)

NOTE: QURAN AND FASTING:

Fasting and the Quran will intercede for a person on the Day of Judgment; fasting will say; “O Allah! I have prevented him from food and drink so allow me to intercede on his behalf.” And the Quran will say, “O Allah! I have prevented him from sleeping at night (because he was busy reading), so allow me to intercede in his favour.” Almighty Allah will allow them to intercede. (Ahmad)

NOTE: SURAH AL MULK

Imam Ahmad recorded from Abu Hurayrah that Allah’s Messenger said, ‘Verily, there is a chapter in the Qur’an which contains thirty Ayat that will intercede on behalf of its reciter until he is forgiven. (It is): (Blessed be He in Whose Hand is the dominion.)’

(by At-Tirmidhi and the four Sunan Compilers. At-Tirmidhi said concerning it, “This is a Hasan Hadith.”)

At-Tabarani and Al-Hafiz Ad-Diya’ Al-Maqdisi both recorded from Anas that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘There is a chapter of the Qur’an that will argue on behalf of its reciter until it causes him to enter into Paradise. (It is): “Blessed be He in Whose Hand is the dominion.”’

NOTE: PATIENCE – Ali ibn Al Husain Zin Al `Abidin said: “When Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala gathers people from the first generations and people from the later generations, an announcer will announce: ‘Where are the patient people, so that they will enter Paradise before trial?’” This is supported by Allah’s subhanahu wa ta`ala statement “Only those who are patient will receive their rewards in full without reckoning.” (39:10)

NOTE: THE LAST PERSON TAKEN OUT OF HELL-FIRE

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:
Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: I know the last of the inhabitants of Fire to be taken out therefrom, and the last of the inhabitants of Paradise to enter it. A man will come out of the Fire crawling. Then Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, will say to him: Go and enter Paradise. So he would come to it and it would appear to him as if it were full. He would go back and say: O my Lord! I found it full. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, would say to him: Go and enter Paradise. He would come and perceive as if it were full. He would return and say: O my Lord! I found it full. Allah would say to him: Go and enter Paradise, for there is for you the like of the world and ten times like it, or for you is ten times the like of this world. He (the narrator) said: He (that man) would ask: Are You making fun of me? or Are You laughing at me, though You are the King? He (the narrator) said: I saw Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) laugh till his front teeth were visible. And it was said: That would be the lowest rank among the inhabitants of Paradise.      (Sahim Muslim)

  1. THE VERY LAST STAGE

Abu Sa`eed reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

“Death will be brought on the Day of Resurrection in the form of a white-colored ram.” [Abu Kuraib made the addition, “Then it will be made to stand between Paradise and Hell.” So far as the rest of the hadeeth is concerned, there is perfect agreement between narrators.] “It will be said to the people of Paradise, ‘Do you recognize this?’ They will raise up their necks, look towards it and say, ‘Yes, it is death.’ Then a command will be given to slaughter it, and it will be said, ‘O people of Paradise, there is everlasting life for you and no death.’ Then [addressing] the people of Hellfire, it will be said, ‘O people of Hellfire, there is everlasting life for you and no death.’” Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) then recited the following verse pointing wit his hand to this [material] world: “Warn them of the day of regret, when their affairs will be decided. They are unmindful, and they do not believe.” [19:39] [Muslim]

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“It will be said to the people of Paradise, ‘O people of Paradise, eternity [for you] and no death!’ To the people of the Fire [it will be said], ‘O people of the Fire, eternity [for you] and no death!’” [Al-Bukhaari]
