Steps2Allah
Being Muslim, we often look towards the final messenger of Islam for guidance. The life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has several lessons essential for the personal development and growth of any human being. His actions and teachings are timeless wisdom that apply to our everyday lives. This article will discuss the top ten valuable lessons from his life that can inspire us to become better human beings.
Honesty
People often referred to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as ‘Al-Ameen’ which means trustworthy. He had earned this title even before his prophethood. His honesty and integrity were never a match to anyone else, and he ensured he never compromised on these two. You can even find hadith references that also mention how Allah rewards every Muslim for their good deeds. His honest qualities were not only found in his personal life, but he was also the same in his professional dealings. These two qualities helped gain people’s trust and built his credibility.Narrated `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e., wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar.”[Sahih al-Bukhari 6094]
Patience in Difficulty
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was incredibly patient during his entire lifetime which helped him to endure hardships without affecting his faith in Allah. He was persecuted in Mecca, lost his loved ones and faced other tough challenges to spread Islam yet he remained patient and steadfast. Such characteristics help teach other Muslims how to trust Allah’s plan and be resilient during difficult times. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Do not wish for an encounter with the enemy. Pray to Allah to grant you safety; (but) when you encounter them, show patience.”[Riyad as-Salihin 1351]
Forgiveness
Jarir reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Allah Almighty will not show mercy to the person who does not show mercy to other people.”[Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 370]Forgiveness was a trait that was most commonly preached by the Holy Prophet. When He had conquered Mecca, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) forgave all of his enemies or those who had opposed him. This simple act turned all of his enemies into His followers. If we let go of any resentment towards others, we free our minds from all the negativity and in return, we can focus on peace and personal healing.
Empathy
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a perfect example of compassion and empathy. He showed kindness not only to his companions but towards children, animals and even his enemies. ‘A’isha, the wife of Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ), reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:‘A’isha, verily Allah is kind and He loves kindness and confers upon kindness which he does not confer upon severity and does not confer upon anything else besides it (kindness).[Sahih Muslim 2593]
Self-Discipline
Every act that the Prophet Muhammad performed in his daily life was a reflection of self-discipline. This was easily observed every time he offered his prayers, worshipped or led his personal life. This special quality of the Prophet (PBUH) encourages Muslims to build routines and stay committed to their goals.
Humility
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the last messenger of Allah. He was the leader of thousands of Muslims, yet he was humble and down to earth. He had a habit of performing his house chores, fixing his clothes and sitting among his companions as equals. His leadership qualities help to teach us that empathy and service are the two traits that help any leader gain respect in society. ‘Iyad bin Himar (May Allah be pleased with him) said:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Verily, Allah has revealed to me that you should adopt humility. So that no one may wrong another and no one may be disdainful and haughty towards another.”[Riyad as-Salihin 1589]
Seeking Knowledge
Narrated Abu Hurairah:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.”[Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2646]The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) constantly placed high importance on seeking knowledge. One of the reasons for this is that knowledge helps us to enrich our minds and broaden our horizons. If a person focuses His mind on seeking knowledge, he will always find success in his future endeavors.
Justice
The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was an advocate for equality and justice. He treated all people in the same manner regardless of their race, background or social status. This key quality of the prophet helped to instill values of respect and harmony in society.Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, reported that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said:“My slaves! I have forbidden injustice for Myself and I have made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another.”[Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 490]
Gratitude
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:“Whoever is not grateful to the people, he is not grateful to Allah.”[Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1954]Gratitude was another trait the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had. Even though he constantly faced hardships when spreading Allah’s message, he never complained about it. Instead, he thanked Allah for His blessings. Practicing gratitude helps to appreciate and build a positive outlook on life.
Community Building
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) placed great importance on building strong relations within the community. By forming strong connections and contributing towards the well-being of others, we can foster unity. Such practices also allow to building of communities that grow together.
